Only in Hawaii Mini Show – January 4 – 26, 2025

Artist Doug Perrine’s “ONLY IN HAWAII”  mini show opens Jan. 4 in the back gallery room of the Firehouse Gallery.  The show features photographic prints on both paper and metal, mostly in small, affordable sizes, showcasing some of Hawaii’s most beautiful endemic birds, fishes, plants, and invertebrates..
Doug Perrine is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost marine wildlife photographers. His photographs have been reproduced in every major nature magazine in the world, as well as in thousands of books, calendars, cards and posters, along with more than 300 magazine covers. His photography has won many awards, including the prestigious BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year as the overall winner (2004). He is also the author of seven books on marine life and many magazine articles. Originally from Dallas, Texas, Doug was educated at the University of Hawaii and the University of Miami, with degrees in marine biology. He returned to live in Hawaii in 1997. After years of traveling, he is now concentrating on the natural wonders found within Hawaii’s environment, and particularly those found nowhere else in the world.
The artist has this to say about the images:  “Nature creates the beauty you see, over a painstaking process of millions of years of evolution. I am merely there to try to capture this splendor, with patience and knowledge of my equipment as my primary tools. I hope that these images will inspire the viewer to take an interest in the species represented, as many are threatened or endangered, and some may likely vanish from existence within our lifetimes. Each print is accompanied by an information card with snippets of knowledge about the species and a connection to a group working to protect that species.”
The Firehouse Gallery is open Thurs.-Sun. from 11–3 and whenever the flags are flying.  Join us for the opening of this mini show and Big Island Blooms on January 4 from 3-5 pm.
