Call for Art: 42nd ANNUAL FOUNDERS JURIED ART SHOW – Deadline September 25&26, 2026

The Waimea Arts Council invites Hawaii Island artists to join and enter 42nd ANNUAL FOUNDERS JURIED ART SHOW

Firehouse Gallery • October 3 – Nov. 15, 2026

Important Dates
Art submission:  Friday and Saturday, Sept. 25, 26 from 11 am – 3 pm
Opening Reception: 
Saturday, October 3, 2026

Opening reception and Awards announcement: 
Firehouse Gallery, Saturday, October 3, 3 – 5 pm
Exhibition closes: Sunday, November 15. Artists need to pick up unsold
work on this day from 11 am-3 pm.

Submitting Artwork
Entries: $20 non-refundable entry fee per piece. Maximum of three entries per artist. Fees are paid when entering pieces. Fees cover the cost of the exhibition, including marketing, awards, and reception.

Eligibility Criteria
Open to Hawai’i Island-based artists who are current members of the Waimea Arts Council. Individuals who join the Waimea Arts Council may enter this show. A membership form is attached to this prospectus. If accepted for the Firehouse Gallery exhibition, all work must be gallery-quality, installation-ready to hang, or easily installed with wire attached (no sawtooth hangers or shrink wrap).
• Open to any media 2- and 3-D art. No video.
• All entered pieces must be available for sale.
• No reproductions, AI-generated art, or teacher assisted art will be accepted.
• The maximum size for any entry, including the frame, is 36 x 36 inches
(or approximately 1296 square inches).
• Artwork must have been created within the past two years.
• Artwork must not have been in the past Waimea Arts Council-sponsored
juried shows or have won previous awards in any contest.
• If accepted for the Firehouse Gallery exhibition, all work must be gallery-quality, installation-ready to hang, or easily installed with wire attached (no sawtooth hangers or shrink wrap).

Prizes: 
Cash awards presented at the reception on Saturday, October 3, 3-5 pm.

Sales and terms

  • Works must be for sale.
    For any work sold, Donation schedule (portion of sales) based on volunteer hours:
    Artists receive a higher percentage of sales based on their volunteer contributions each month:
  • 50% donation (artist receives 50%) – Less than 4 volunteer hours/month
  • 30% donation (artist receives 70%) – Minimum 4 volunteer hours/month
  • 25% donation (artist receives 75%) – Minimum 8 volunteer hours/month
  • 20% donation (artist receives 80%) – Minimum 12 volunteer hours/month, including at least 4 hours/month as a gallery docent

The Waimea Arts Council will handle all work with the utmost care; however, artists will be responsible for the liability of their art and will hold the Waimea Arts Council harmless.

Artists are responsible for arranging the necessary shipping of sold work by contacting the buyer directly to cover any associated shipping fees.

Judging Information:
Entries will be judged using five criteria: originality, visual balance, clarity, personal expression, and execution of the medium.

Judge
Richard Bodien is a painter, poet, and musician based in Hāwī, Hawaiʻi. His work has been exhibited in Seattle, his own Hāwī Gallery, and at the Kahilu Theater. His abstract paintings are represented by Tiffany’s Art Agency. A lifelong student of art history, Bodien has both an artist’s eye and a broad perspective of American, European and Asian art.

From 2011 through 2020, he founded and operated Hāwī Gallery, a museum-like destination featuring carefully curated selections of fine art, books, ʻukulele, Hawaiian music, vintage aloha wear, and authentic Hawaiian artifacts.
