38th Annual Founders Juried Art Show at Firehouse Gallery

1st Place: “Kanani” by Lorie Taylor

The public is invited to attend the Waimea Arts Council newest show, the 38th Annual Founders Juried Art Show at the Firehouse Gallery in Kamuela which runs Sep. 30, 2022 – Nov. 27, 2022.   A virtual version of the show is available at https://youtu.be/H5HRhtOQFUc.

This popular annual juried art show features artwork created by Waimea Arts Council member artists. This year, there were 63 entries submitted by 30 members.  Judges Kanaka Maoli Moses Kealamakia, an award-winning artist and teacher who has recently returned to his birthplace, Waimea, Mary Spears, an active art instructor whose design work encompasses logo creation to fabric, and Martin Sanchez, artist and Smart Shark Designs Gallery owner, had the difficult task of selecting pieces for the show and awarding prizes.  Winners were announced at the reception on October 1, 2022 and are as follows:

  • 1st place: “Kanani” by Lorie Taylor
  • 2nd place: “She Sells Seashells” by Irina Place
  • 3rd place: “Five Miles per Hour” by Dawn Sagar
  • Juror’s Choice: “Lava Bowl” by Karen Thrasher
  • Juror’s Choice: “Being” by Elissa Keiko Yamamoto
  • Juror’s Choice: “Abundance” by Joalene Young
  • Honorable Mention: “Blue Wave” by Terry Bensch
  • Honorable Mention: “Hukilau I” by Irina Place
  • Honorable Mention: “Dragonfly Dawn” by Kathy Sprinkle

Many of the artists selected for this popular show will be at the gallery on open days to meet and greet visitors. Gallery hours are Friday, Saturday & Sunday 11 am – 3 pm. Artists donate a percentage of all sales to support the Waimea Arts Council’s community projects.

The Waimea Arts Council, a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization, is the island’s oldest arts group for supporters of the arts. The Firehouse Gallery is its most successful program.  It is located at 67-1201 Mamalahoa Hwy., Kamuela, Hawaii.
