Note: Remove "(no-spam)" from all email adresses before using them. November 2004 Tandem Art Show Henry and Bettie Lyon
Henry and Bettie Lyon have been married 52 years - friends for 60 years - a fitting background for
their tandem art display at the non-profit Firehouse Gallery in Waimea for the month of November.
Their show is a retrospective with some pieces produced in the 1940's and 1950's. More than 50
pieces will be on display including watercolor, colored pen and pencil, and ink drawings by Henry
and Danish thread count pieces by Bettie.
Henry and Bettie both graduated from Cornell University, Henry as a botanist with minors in
psychology, art, and military science. During school he worked as a cartoonist and illustrator for
school papers and professional periodicals.
After graduation Henry spent a short time in Korea. His entry into commerce was related to botany
as he designed horticultural-related packaging and promotional art in the form of a specialty
catalog with illustrations and cartoons. He published this catalog exclusively for a number of
years while also designing store windows and storewide decorating.
Henry usually produces a piece per day with few exceptions. "Free time is spent working toward fine
art in the area of abstract realism, and I'm probably having more fun than I should," said Henry.
Bettie, also a Cornell graduate (major in textiles and design, minor in foods) is a fine artist in
her own right, accomplished in Danish Thread Count. This is an ancient art, formally restricted to
"Royalty only" using thread and fabric. The intricate elegance of these works requires many hours of
concentration and patience.
Henry and Bettie have lived in Hawai`i since 1978 - the last 24 years on their favorite island,
Hawai'i. "A place with more picture possibilities than the rest of the world", is a direct quote
from these artists.
Both Henry and Bettie have won several awards through the Waimea Arts Council. Henry received
national recognition through television's CNN for his portrait of President Franklin Roosevelt.
Their pieces can be found in private collections throughout Hawai`i, Mainland USA, Canada, Japan,
and Australia. They are both active in the Waimea Arts Council, the Retired Seniors Volunteer
Program and Bettie with North Hawai'i Community Hospital. Henry also had one picture hanging in
the National Gallery. Ask him about it.
The Firehouse Gallery, a project of the Waimea Arts Council, is the large red building located
within the historic corner at the main stoplight in Waimea. The Waimea Arts Council is a non-profit
organization dedicated to promoting the arts in North Hawai`i and is supported primarily by donations
from its members. Scheduled gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to
2:00 p.m. For more information, call 887-1052.
1. Again, we would like to thank each and every volunteer that made this year's Helen M. Cassidy
Juried Show a resounding success. Congratulations to all awarded winners. Congratulations to all
presented artists, each a winner in their own right.
2. Due to renovations and construction on our Historic corner beginning perhaps in January, the
Firehouse will need to be closed. The dust, noise, and lack of parking spaces will render it too
inconvenient to remain open. The dates of construction have not been made available.
3. We are looking for new volunteers to take Toni Hess's place as Treasurer and Membership
Chairperson. She has worked extremely hard to re-organize the records and will make the transition
for anyone coming into these positions easier.
4. We're also looking for a person/s to volunteer as the Gallery Chairperson/s to oversee the
general operation of the Firehouse. Someone who would be available consistently.
5. The Annual HIV/AIDS Foundation Benefit is 19 Nov. in the King Kamehameha Beach Hotel,
Kailua-Kona. There will be a silent auction of donated art work and gift items. Pick-up by the
Foundation can be arranged. A tax deducted piece of art can be donated by calling: 331-8177.
6. We would like to maintain a roster of key holders of the Fire Station. Some of you may have only
the key to the gallery, while others may have the key to the office, as well. If you are presently
holding any key for the WAC, please, leave a message for Sandra Woodford @ 982-3946 or email:

Toni has done a remarkable re-organization in the WAC office. She has put many selfless hours into
sifting through massive amounts of paperwork dating as far back as 30 years. Her efforts are greatly
appreciated. When you see her, take time to thank her in person.
To make a "Closed" sign for the outside of the Firehouse for the month of January:
We are going to start putting the contents of the newsletter on our website (waimeaartscouncil.org).
