Tutu's Quilters at the Firehouse Gallery in September

The Waimea Arts Council announces its September show in the Firehouse Gallery as an `Ohana Show of quilted works from Tutu's House.

Every Monday morning, Tutu's House is filled with the sounds of conversation and laughter when Tutu's quilters gather to talk story and relax with their needlework. What started almost six years ago as a small gathering of women who wanted to learn Hawaiian quilting, has evolved into a weekly gathering of ladies (and sometimes men) enjoying not only Hawaiian quilting but also patchwork quilting, fabric dyeing, beading, bag making, and whatever else strikes their fancy. While the experience levels vary from beginner to accomplished, the emphasis is on sharing, friendship, and enjoying quilting regardless of skill.

The original purpose of learning Hawaiian quilting has not been lost. The group encourages visitors and kama`aina alike to come and learn the basics of Hawaiian quilting with a free kit and lots of encouragement. Ask anyone in the group what is the best thing about Tutu's Quilters and without a doubt they'll say, "the support and friendship of our fellow quilters." That encouragement seems to work - this is a productive group with even the newest quilters making beautiful pillows, wall hangings and bags, sometimes out of fabric they have learned to dye themselves. It is no wonder that members have been known to schedule their off-island travel so they won't miss a Monday at Tutu's House.

Current members of Tutu's Quilters are: Sharon Azevedo, Joan Beaver, Yvonne DeLuz, Nancy Donigan, Norma Edelman, Lorane Eilliott, Diane Foster, Sandi Foster, Dorothy Haffner, Mary Hinck, Becky Jacobs, Amy Kawano, Millie Kawano, Kikuko Kibe, Miulan Luke, Kathy Lukens, Tere Martinson, Lettie McGillivray, Gloria Mycklebust, Kathy Ockuly, Violet Oketani, Janet Okimoto, Sheila Okin, Edna Papaia, Kathy Peters, Nancy Phillips, Ann Scheeran, Myrtle Shiroyama, Kathy Tanaka, Dominique Viellet, Shirley Wilson, and Barb Yost. Tutu's Quilters meet every Monday morning from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. at Tutu's House in Waimea.

A reception is planned for Tutu's Quilters on Saturday September 10th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Firehouse Gallery. This is a chance to meet these talented artists and view their works, some even for sale. Everyone is invited to attend.

The Firehouse Gallery, a project of the Waimea Arts Council, is located in the old firehouse, the red building within the historic corner at the main stoplight and crossroads in Waimea. Scheduled gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The Waimea Arts Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts in North Hawai`i and is supported primarily by donations from its members. Membership is open to all artists and supporters of the arts. WAC's gallery telephone number is 887-1052.

President's Message

On a very personal note, Iıd like to thank Julie McCue for asking me to display my art pieces with hers, during the Tandem Show in October. It was a very generous and gracious gesture. It takes a number of hands to put a show together and volunteers were on hand to give their time and energy so willingly. Thank you Suzanne Haight, Merna Watta, Anne Sheftic, Marge Wald, and Jay West.

The Gallery is still going through a transitional phase. Before the back area can be used to display works of our eligible members, we plan to re-configure & paint/cover the walls. A proposal will be presented to the Board from the Decorating Committee, comprised of Jay West and Amaury Saint Gilles, with the aid of two outside professionalıs input & suggestions. Again, we ask for your patience.

To keep the cost reasonable for these new renovations of the interior Gallery, weıre asking for donations from our members. If you like to donate any amount of money, please send it to the Gallery and specify that it is to go toward the renovation effort.

It was great to see Dolly Loo back up on her feet and in our midst.

Thank you, Amaury Saint Gilles for your donation of numerous Gallery pedestals.

Donıt forget that our Newsletter may be viewed on-line: www.waimeaartscouncil.org

The monthly Board Meeting, every second Saturday, 1:30 pm is open for all members to attend. If there is a specific issue to be presented, we ask that you give advance notice to the Board. Contact Sandra Woodford: (808) 982-3946 or sandlewood49@hotmail.com. Suggestions/ideas/questions are welcome, always. Weıd like to open communications for all our members and address all concerns.

Volunteers are constantly needed as docents, aiding in the intake/take down of art for each show, help with wall coverings/wall painting/putting up new shutters, or just brainstorming. Please consider giving your time.

Sincerely,
Sandra Woodford, President
Judy Folk, President

From the Gallery Chair . . .

Mahalo to members, new and old, that filled the monthly slots for shows for the coming year. We are still looking for 3 dimensional artists (sculpture, ceramics, glass, crafts) to exhibit with Ann Sheftic in June 2006, and with Priya in September 2006. To exhibit in monthly shows artists need to have been a WAC member for one year, plus volunteer 4 hours a month. Let me know if you are interested.

Members should have received the survey that was mailed out before this newsletter. Please return it ASAP as the board values your comments.

I want to thank the Gallery docents that volunteered over the summer for keeping track of what time of day we have visitors. Based on this data and member feedback, the Firehouse Gallery will change its hours starting in November. New hours will be Tuesday through Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

We are still working through the process of re-designing the Gallery with the gracious in-kind donation of services from Waimea interior designer Sue Moss. As I was going through files in the office I found that the Arts Council last invested in making-over the Gallery in 1990. Growth in our community is inevitable so the timing is right to do a more involved makeover. The general plan is to provide more wall space to display original art plus rack systems to handle cards and prints. WAC has limited funds available for this project and is asking for monetary donations specifically for the gallery remodel. If you value the mission of WAC please contribute any amount you are comfortable with. All donations are tax-deductible; ask for a receipt from the docent.

It took three long months for the county's contractor to rebuild our restroom. The good news is our building now meets the American with Disabilities standards. Until we complete the makeover, member artists are invited to bring in framed artwork and cards for sale starting Sept. 1st. When doing so please update your inventory file and label pieces as in the past. Please note that due to space restrictions we must limit wall pieces to a total of two per artist. Members that have recently volunteered will have first priority. When you do volunteer make sure you sign the volunteer sign-in sheet in the yellow folder in the Gallery.

In the mini-gallery we will continue the WAC print sale through the month of September. These donated pieces from current and past members are selling fast as nothing is priced over $15. If you have prints, which are just collecting dust and which you are willing to donate to WAC for this fundraising project, please drop them off at the Gallery.

The Gallery is always in need of docents. If you would like to become one, contact me and I'll get you set up for training. It's a great way to spread the aloha spirit, meet members, talk story and it's fun. Long-time docents Henry and Bettie Lyons bring in art pieces in process as a "show and tell" to visitors to the Gallery. You can find them at the Gallery on Tuesday mornings almost every week, unless they are off island traveling to exotic places around the world. The next time you see them tell them how much you appreciate them helping to keep the gallery doors open!

Volunteers Needed for the Helen M. Cassidy Show

One way to put in some volunteer hours is to help with group shows. We have such an opportunity coming up with the Helen Cassidy Show in October. If you are able to put in some time to help this show be the success it has been in the past, contact show chair, Jay West at 882-7520. These are the areas where you can help:

Sept. 28 - Oct. 1, Wed, Thursday, Friday and Saturday to take in entries for the show, 10 am to 2 pm,
Oct. 2, Sunday to help organize and display entries for judging, 9:00 till noon,
Oct. 3, Monday to help hang the show, 10:00 till pau,
Oct. 8, Saturday to help with the reception,
Oct. 29, Saturday to help when artists are picking up art.

Election and Annual Meeting in September

All members are encouraged to attend the Annual Meeting, which will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday, September 10th, just prior to the reception for Tutu's House Quilters show. We look forward to seeing you!

WAC Mission Statement

During the August board meeting the following mission statement was agreed upon:

"Waimea Arts Council, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to the promotion of the arts, the encouragement of artists, and the provision of a forum for art-related community events."

Construction Update

The bathroom in the Gallery is complete and roomy! The work continues for us in the other building where a new sink and bathroom facilities will be placed.

Learn Marketing Skills

WAC is in need of a newsletter and website coordinator. Outgoing members Judith Kautz (newsletter) and her son Jess (website), have been of great value. Thank you both for your time and energy. Plus Denise Ulrich, long-time board member, is passing the torch as publicity chair. As a retired graphic artist, board member Jay West can train people in these areas. There is not a big learning curve if you are computer literate. All of these areas, newsletter, website and publicity, provide great skills that would benefit you in promoting yourself as an artist. Contact Jay at 882-7520, artglass@gte.net.

"Flowers and Furniture" Show Mahalo

I want to extend a personal thank you to all of you who helped make our August show a success. It was my first show and a rather scary undertaking, made easier by those of you who helped out as docents, help at the reception, and in general support. For fear of leaving someone out, I am not listing names, but you know who you are. Thanks also to Sandi for sharing the space with me and making the show more interesting. It turned out to be a very fulfilling experience.

    Aloha and Mahalo, Julie McCue

Members' Tropical Show

During the month of January 2006 WAC artist members, both current and new, are invited to display up to two original works of art with a tropical theme. This special show came about from rescheduling of shows due to the County's construction activity at the Gallery during 2005.

This art show will feature works with a connection to a tropical theme in subject matter and/or materials. Gallery Chair Jay West felt this would be a good theme to attract mainland visitors that are escaping the winter weather months. Watch the newsletter for more details

RSVP

The RSVP, an organization for retired persons, have applications in the office for anyone over 55 years of age. Some of the benefits include, mileage reimbursement for someone who volunteers in the community, such as when you docent or devote time to the Gallery; or if you are in an accident while driving to or from your volunteer job, RSVP will cover medical costs should the bill exceed your own insurance coverage. We thank Henry & Bette Lyons for bringing this to our attention, and for additional information provided by Toni Hess.
