Arts Pacifica Biennale at The Firehouse Gallery in July

During the month of July at the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea, on Hawai`i Island, the Waimea Arts Council presents the Arts Pacifica Biennale. Arts Pacifica Biennale 2005, an island-wide juried art competition, is a showcase for Hawaii Island talent. It will be juried by Joel A. Miller, a lecturer in Art at both Tama Art University and Musashi Art University, both located just outside Tokyo. His own work, shown and collected worldwide, is represented in the permanent collections of the Machida City Museum, Japan and Michigan State University Museum. He has studied under Peter Voulkos and is versatile in both three- and two-dimensional art forms. Joel will bring an expert eye to the jurist position

The exhibition will open with a reception on July 9th, Saturday at 3 pm. Everyone is invited to attend. Awards will be announced at this reception.

This juried collection will be displayed in both the Waimea Arts Council Firehouse Gallery and in the lobby of the Kahilu Theater in Waimea. The show will be open daily through July 31st.

The Firehouse Gallery, a project of the Waimea Arts Council, is located in the old firehouse, the red building within the historic corner at the main stoplight and crossroads in Waimea. Scheduled gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Waimea Arts Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts in North Hawai`i and is supported primarily by donations from its members. Membership is open to all artists and supporters of the arts. WAC's gallery telephone number is 887-1052.

President's Message

This is a very exciting time for the gallery. Major changes will take place after the construction phase has ended. The configuration of the gallery will change somewhat. New wall coverings are being discussed, and painting of the peg board walls. Hopefully, the gallery will have a face lift that will honor and showcase our art work to itıs maximum advantage. The completion of the Historic Corner will draw the publicıs eye and encourage more visitors than in the past.

Our new Gallery Chairperson, Jay West, comes to us with a wealth of experience, plans and ideas to transform the gallery and boost us into the current century. She and the Board Members are open to suggestions from any and all members of how and where youıd like to see the gallery go and serve not only you, but the community as a whole. All suggestions are welcome. We look forward to hearing from you. Contact Jay West: artglass(no-spam)@gte.net* or Sandra Woodford: (808) 982-3946 or sandlewood49(no-spam)@hotmail.com.*

Nominations are being sought for board members for the coming year, starting October 1. Any member may serve on the Board. The positions needing to be filled are: Recording Secretary, Newsletter Editor. Webmaster, Corresponding Secretary, and Publicity/Press Chairperson. Anyone willing to serve on the Board should call either, Judy Folk: 885-4302 or Wendi Roehrig: 885-4368 with questions and/or interest. Your participation would be much appreciated.

Remember, the monthly Board Meeting, every second Saturday, 1:30 pm is open for all members to attend. If there is a specific issue to be presented, we ask that you give advance notice to the Board. Contact Sandra Woodford: sandlewood49(no-spam)@hotmail.com* or (808) 982-3946. Suggestions/ideas/questions about the Gallery are welcome, always. Weıd like to open communications to all our members and address all concerns. Contact, Jay West: artglass(no-spam)@gte.net* or leave a note for her in the office.

Volunteers are constantly needed as docents, aiding in the intake/take down of art for each show, help with wall coverings/wall painting/putting up new shutters, or just brainstorming. Please consider giving your time.

Sincerely,
Judy Folk, President
Sandra Woodford, President

Member Survey

A member survey, created by Jay West, Gallery Chairperson, will be sent to each of you. Please take the time to complete it and return by provided postage.

Arts Pacifica Docents Needed

The Arts Pacifica Biennale Show will have extended days and hours: Monday - Saturday, 9 am - 3 pm. We need additional docents to cover these hours. Please sign up or call Amaury Saint-Gilles, 937-9231. Judging for the show will occur on the 4th of July. the awards will be presented during our reception July 9th at 3 pm.

Lead Contamination / Construction Update

We've been told that the construction with lead clean-up will be completed by 1 July. The gallery will remain closed until that is done. When this portion of the work is completed, construction will begin in our other building to provide us with a wheelchair ramp. If there are any delays in that July 1st deadline, it will affect our intake and set up of the Arts Pacifica Biennale Egg Them Show. Again, we will continue to be flexible and remain calm.

Vacancies on the Board

The Board of Directors was notified that the position of Newsletter Editor / Webmaster will be vacated by our industrious and loyal Judy Kautz. Susan Mori will be stepping down as Corresponding Secretary. Julie McCue will take over the Treasurer's slot from Toni Hess, Gallery's backbone for so long. Denise Ulrich will discontinue her brilliant contribution as Publicity / Press Chairperson. If there is anyone willing to publish the Newsletter and maintain our website, or take the Corresponding Secretary, Recording Secretary, or Publicity/Press position, please contact the Nominating Committee: Judy Folk, 885-4302 or Wendi Roehrig, 885-4368. Serving on the board fulfills your obligation of four volunteer hours per month.

30th Year Anniversary

We will be celebrating our 30th year Anniversary, post construction Open House, awards presentations for the Helen M. Cassidy Memorial Show, and announcement of elected Board Members on October 8, 2005 at the Firehouse Gallery.

Helen M. Cassidy Memorial Show

Volunteers for the Helen M. Cassidy Memorial Show in October are needed. Please notify Jay West at artglass(no-spam)@gte.net* or leave a note for her in the office.

Home Depot Receipt

Someone turned in a receipt from the Hilo Home Depot for $9,96, dated 1/7/05. No name, address or telephone number was written on the receipt. If this belongs to any member, the purchase was for a WAC project, and you would like reimbursement, please contact Toni Hess, Treasurer, by a note in her box at the office.

Special Thanks to Jay West

We thank Jay West again for volunteering for the Gallery Chairperson position. She has innovation ideas and will be a positive and creative addition to WAC.
