"Anything Hawaiian" at The Firehouse Gallery in June

During the month of June at the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea, on Hawai`i Island, the Waimea Arts Council presents "Anything Hawaiian". This art show features artwork with a connection to Hawai`i in subject matter and/or materials. Artist members of the Waimea Arts Council are invited to display two pieces of their work that reflect this Hawaiian theme.

A reception for the artists will be held on Saturday, June 11th, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. All members, residents, and visitors are invited to attend. This is a good time to catch up on what your favorite local artists are doing and check out the latest changes in the old fire station.

There may be some construction going on within the historic corner during June so access to the gallery may be occasionally restricted

The Firehouse Gallery, a project of the Waimea Arts Council, is located in the old firehouse, the red building within the historic corner at the main stoplight and crossroads in Waimea. Scheduled gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Waimea Arts Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts in North Hawai`i and is supported primarily by donations from its members. Membership is open to all artists and supporters of the arts. WAC's gallery telephone number is 887-1052.

Arts Pacifica Biennale 2005 theme: EGG

Arts Pacifica Biennale 2005, an island-wide juried art competition, is a showcase for Hawaii Island talent. It will be juried by Joel A. Miller, a lecturer in Art at both Tama Art University and Musashi Art University, both located just outside Tokyo. His own work, shown and collected worldwide, is represented in the permanent collections of the Machida City Museum, Japan and Michigan State University Museum. He has studied under Peter Voulkos and is versatile in both three- and two-dimensional art forms. Joel will bring an expert eye to the jurist position especially with his up-to-date knowledge of digital arts.

All artists working on the Big Island of Hawaii are eligible to submit a maximum of three pieces. You can also participate in the "Small Table" segment by reserving one of 30 openings for that part of the competition by calling 937-9231.

All mediums are acceptable, but piece(s) must conform to the following rules:

  • They should reflect the theme EGG in some easily recognizable manner. If thematic references are subtle, space is provided for simple explanations.
  • Works should have been created within the past two years.
  • They should not have been previously exhibited in any juried show.
  • All entries should be ready to display with additional labor.
  • Unframed works and those requiring two people to move are unacceptable.
  • Prices should include 50% commission for the organizing groups.
  • NFS pieces will not be considered for prizes nor shown to the SFCA.
  • Awards will be given without regard to the different mediums.
  • A juror's award of $1000 will be given to the top piece while three secondary awards of $500 each will also be given.
  • The newly added segment "Small Table" works have size/boxing requirements and there will be a separate $500 prize in that category.
  • All artworks are displayed at the discretion of the organizer.

Intake dates are July 1 and 2 between 10 am and 4 pm at the Firehouse Gallery. Entry fees are as follows: one piece - $15; two pieces - $25; three pieces - $30. Entry forms are available at the Firehouse Gallery or from Amaury Saint-Gilles, 937-9231, amaury(no-spam)@artspacifica.com.

The exhibition will open with a reception on July 9th, Saturday at 3 pm. Everyone is invited to attend. Awards will be announced at this reception.

This juried collection will be displayed in both the Waimea Arts Council Firehouse Gallery and in the lobby of the Kahilu Theater in Waimea. The show will be open daily through July 31st.

President's Message

The time frame given to us for completion of construction work on the gallery is the end of June, BUT the contractors tested the soil outside the gallery, which proved positive for lead, but in a level that is acceptable by EPA standards. Because of that test, swabs were done inside the gallery. It was found to have unacceptable levels of lead in the dust/dirt around the toilet, sink and storage area where the extra doors and panels are housed. It was recommended that we either close the gallery or restrain people from entering that area, until it is cleaned up. Since we have no other show scheduled, except the one that is already there, we will remain open. If the County requests that we close, we will. We will just have to bob and weave with the rest of them!

If you'd like to have your individual show digitally photographed and placed on the website, feel free to do so and send to webmaster@waimeaartscouncil.org. Should anyone wish to take digital photos of our group shows, please feel free to do so and email them.

October is our 30th year Anniversary, as well as the Helen Cassidy show. For the 20th Anniversary Celebration, pupus were served, a band played, and the awards for the winners of the Helen Cassidy show were presented, with their winning works on display in the Town Hall. This afternoon of festivities was open to all members and their families, as well as open to the community. Each person purchased a $5 dollar ticket. We could present a new category of "People's Choice" award, where each visitor to the gallery can vote once for their favorite piece of art. The votes would be tallied at the end of the month and also presented with the Helen Cassidy show winners. It was decided by the Board members that we would present these ideas back to you, the members. If there is interest in a celebration, please notify Sandra Woodford sandlewood49(no-spam)@hotmail.com or 982-3946. From the members available, we will need help securing a facility, arranging for food and for entertainment, if you wish. We also need a volunteer/s to chair the Helen Cassidy show. It seems like a long time in advance, but now is the time to start organizing and we need your help, please.

Julie McCue has graciously volunteered to organize a central gallery binder/s that will contain all procedures required for our shows and description of each board members routine tasks.

A very deep and generous thanks goes to our own Saint Suzanne Haight for all of the hours she has taken on to keep the gallery open as often as it has been, to hang shows, clean out bathrooms, empty garbage, the list goes on. She selflessly has devoted her time to make sure all runs smoothly. We cannot thank her enough.

A special thanks goes to Merna Joan Watta, who literally put her own private life on hold to attend the gallery each and every Saturday and beyond. You worked hard, we know! We're glad you have your life back, but you are sorely missed at the gallery.

We'd like to open a contest to each member - a design for Waimea Arts Council business cards. Please, place all entries into Judy Folk's mailbox up in the office. Deadline will be 30 Aug 2005 and announced in the Sept. 2005 Newsletter. Good Luck!

Is there any interest in displaying our artwork at the Kahilu Theater? Again, notify Sandra Woodford.

Volunteers will be needed for the annual nominating committee for Board members. Please, notify Sandra Woodford if you are interested.

Sincerely,
Judy Folk, President
Sandra Woodford, President

Tutu's Quilters Rescheduled for September

Due to the extensive construction activity on the Historic Corner in Waimea and the impending work on the Firehouse Gallery itself, the `Ohana Show of quilted works from Tutu's House has been rescheduled from June to September. The current show, "Anything Hawaiian" will be held over.

Normal gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. However, due to the construction activity the gallery may have to be closed for some periods of time.

New Gallery Chairman

Jay West has graciously volunteered to be gallery chairman. One of the first things she will be doing is to document what it is that the gallery chairman does. Please contact her at artglass@gte.net with any suggestions or questions about the gallery.
