May 2005 "Anything Hawaiian" at The Firehouse Gallery in May During the month of May at the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea, on Hawai`i Island, the Waimea Arts Council presents "Anything Hawaiian". This art show features artwork with a connection to Hawai`i in subject matter and/or materials. Artist members of the Waimea Arts Council are invited to display two pieces of their work that reflect this Hawaiian theme. A reception for the artists will be held on Saturday, May 14th, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. All members, residents, and visitors are invited to attend. This is a good time to catch up on what your favorite local artists are doing and check out the latest changes in the old fire station. There may be some construction going on within the historic corner during May so access to the gallery may be occasionally restricted
The Firehouse Gallery, a project of the Waimea Arts Council, is located in the old firehouse, the red building within the historic corner at the main stoplight and crossroads in Waimea. Scheduled gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The Waimea Arts Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts in North Hawai`i and is supported primarily by donations from its members. Membership is open to all artists and supporters of the arts. WAC's gallery telephone number is 887-1052.
Awards consisting of frames and art supplies were presented by Janice Gail, for the Waimea Arts
Council, to the winners of the 21st Annual Na `Opio Junior Juried Art Show at the Firehouse Gallery
on Saturday, April 16th. This outstanding show of nearly 100 pieces of art by North Hawai`i young
people will be on display through Saturday April 30th.ÊÊ
Free art lessons for Na `Opio entrants are scheduled for two Saturdays in May:
Entrants who have not yet signed up and would like to participate should call the Firehouse Gallery
at 887-1052 or Janice Gail at 775-0466.
The aim of this annual show is to promote and encourage talent among the students in the Kohala,
Waimea, Waikoloa, Kawaihae, and Hamakua areas of Hawai'i Island. Competition is based on grade
level rather than between schools.
Judging was done by Marie McDonald, active artist, art teacher, member of the Waimea Arts Council,
and Waimea resident.
21st Annual Na 'Opio Junior Juried Art Show Award Winners
6th Grade:
The 21st Annual Na ÔOpio Junior Juried Art Show in April was most wonderful. Congratulations to all
that entered and extra congratulations to the winners. We thank the judge, the teachers, the
participants, and special thanks for the undying efforts of the volunteers who organized the show.
As you must have noticed, work continues on our Historic Corner Restoration Project. We donÕt have a
completion date, as yet. There are great changes happening within the gallery buildings, too. We ask
for your patience. Items are being shuffled about and re-organized. Eventually, when the dust
settles, the pukas, cabinets, and drawers will be labeled.
WeÕre looking forward to our May ÒAnything HawaiianÓ Show. It promises to be fantastic.
If there are any questions/ issues youÕd like to discuss or present to the Board, please feel free
to drop your suggestion in Judy Folk or Sandra WoodfordÕs Òmail boxÓ up in the office or email

Sincerely,
All artists who have art stored in the office, back kitchen area, or pukas are urged to please pick
their pieces up. With the construction work going on it is particularly important to have few
extra items about as possible

2005
Arts Pacifica Biennale 2005, an island-wide juried art competition, is a showcase for Hawaii Island
talent. It will be juried by Joel A. Miller, a lecturer in Art at both Tama Art University and
Musashi Art University, both located just outside Tokyo. His own work, shown and collected
worldwide, is represented in the permanent collections of the Machida City Museum, Japan and
Michigan State University Museum. He has studied under Peter Voulkos and is versatile in both
three- and two-dimensional art forms. Joel will bring an expert eye to the jurist position
especially with his up-to-date knowledge of digital arts.
All artists working on the Big Island of Hawaii are eligible to submit a maximum of three pieces.
You can also participate in the "Small Table" segment by reserving one of 30 openings for that part
of the competition by calling 937-9231.
All mediums are acceptable, but piece(s) must conform to the following rules:
The exhibition will open with a reception on July 9th, Saturday at 3 pm. Everyone is invited to
attend. Awards will be announced at this reception
This juried collection will be displayed in both the Waimea Arts Council Firehouse Gallery and in
the lobby of the Kahilu Theater in Waimea. The show will be open daily through July 31st.
The Arts Pacifica Biennale show will be open extended hours so extra docents will be needed in
July. Please consider volunteering extra hours that month to help make this special show a success.
Mahalo!
It's again time to ready entries for Arts Pacifica Biennale 2005. This island-wide juried
competition, the fourth such showcase of Hawaii Island artistic talent, will be judged by Joel A.
Miller from Japan. A lecturer in Art at both Tama Art University and Musashi Art University, located
just outside Tokyo, his own work has been shown and collected worldwide. He is represented in the
permanent collection(s) of the Machida City Museum, Japan and the Michigan State Univ. Museum.
Versatile in both three and two dimensional art forms, Joel will bring an expert eye to the jurist
position.
The 2005 collection will be shown in Waimea split between two nearby venues Ð the Waimea Arts
Councils' Firehouse Gallery and the Kahilu Theater Lobby. Dates for placing entries are July 1 & 2
between 10 AM and 4 PM both days. Entry fees for the show are as follows: one (1) piece - $15; two
(2) pieces - $25; and three (3) pieces - $30. Entry forms will be available at most frame shops
island wide as well as by Fax or e-mail.
The theme for this bi-annual exhibition is EGG ! Interpretation is left to the creative mind of each
participating artist. If any works' connection to Ôegg' should be hard to fathom, note space will be
provided on each entry form for a simple explanation. Work should be ready to hang/display without
any additional labor. Any piece that requires two or more people to move and/or hang will not be
accepted for this competition.
In 2003, the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Acquisitions Committee made their third buying
visit to this juried showcase for Hawaii artists buying two distinctive pieces for the state
collection. They are again expected to grace us with their presence thus giving artists more
reason(s) beyond the $2500 in prize monies being offered to enter this open competition.
One different aspect of the 2005 Biennale will be inclusion of fine furniture in this competition.
Up to thirty (30) furniture artists can enter a single small table in this separate division of the
show. Each participating maker will be required to pre-purchase a numbered heavy-duty packing case
that measures 30 inches cubed. These works will be accepted as they deliver their tables packed for
shipping out-of-state in these pre-numbered cases.
