Sculpture and ceramics are included along with two-dimensional art. Prizes are awarded by grade and consist of art supplies and frames. Art lessons are offered for all students who enter. The aim of this annual show is to promote and encourage talent among the students of Kohala, Waimea, Waikoloa, Kawaihae, and Hamakua areas of Hawai'i Island. Competition is based on grade level rather than between schools. Awards will be presented at a reception for artists, judge, family members, and art teachers, at the Firehouse Gallery on Saturday, April 16th, 3:00-5:00 p.m. The awards ceremony will begin at 4:00 pm. The public is invited to attend and support these young artists. The show will be up from April 5 through April 30.
The Firehouse Gallery, a project of the Waimea Arts Council, is located in the old firehouse, the red building within the historic corner at the main stoplight and crossroads in Waimea. Scheduled gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The Waimea Arts Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts in North Hawai`i and is supported primarily by donations from its members. Membership is open to all artists and supporters of the arts. WAC's gallery telephone number is 887-1052.
As the sages tell us, The Only Constant in Life is Change.
On that note, you will notice that there have been changes to our parking lot at the Gallery. The
newspapers say that the renovations will take 120 days. Shall we place bets? As this project
progresses, we will need to continue being flexible.
One of the challenges is that there is a new peg placed in front of one of the Òbarn doorsÓ by the
contractors; this new peg is shorter than the old one, allowing the wind to blow the chain off
during high winds. When you are working as a docent, please place a rock in front of the door when
it is open so that it doesnÕt blow shut unexpectedly and injure someone.
Congratulations to one and all for the wonderful display of works for MarchÕs Anything Goes Show.
Great participation! Thank you to all who helped organize the pieces.
Dolly Loo was re-admitted to the hospital. but expected to be released lickety-split. Our thoughts
are with you, Dolly.
If there are any questions/ issues youÕd like to discuss or present to the Board, please feel free
to drop your suggestion in Judy Folk or Sandra WoodfordÕs Òmail boxÓ in the WAC office or email
Sandra at: sandlewood49(no-spam)@hotmail.com. We all wish for open lines of communication and absolutely
insist you have a say in the way the gallery is organized/operated. As a reminder, all members
are welcome to attend the monthly Board Meetings. Your voice will be heard.
If you would like a space for: ÒAsk the PresidentÓ in the newsletter, we would be glad to address
issues there, as well. We do ask that if you wish to bring an issue up with the Board, you do so
with a monthÕs notice.
Are there any volunteers for a full-time Main Gallery Chairperson? Anyone you might know who is
retired and seeking a low key position to fill their time? Relative? Friend? Acquaintance?
We have an increasing number of new members that would like to be trained as docents, which we
desperately need to keep the galley open the maximum days of the month. But, weÕre having a
problem with regular docents volunteering their time so we can train these new members. Please, be
generous with your time.
Through the generosity of Bettie & Henry Lyon, there is a new, stream-lined, up-dated table,
replacing the heavy, large one. It can be placed in the Main Gallery should you prefer to use it
rather than the small table in the front satellite gallery room while you docent. Thank you Mr. &
Mrs Lyon.
Sincerely,
2005
1st - Deadline for Submissions to the Na 'Opio Show, 2:00 pm
Work is well under way outside the gallery. Sidewalks are being installed in front of the buildings
and the Birds of Paradise have been removed.
There has been controversy concerning the renovation of the main gallery bathroom. The original
blueprint plans called for a renovated bathroom with new toilet, sink, back door, and wiring for
new lighting. There was some concern that expanding the bathroom to be handicapped accessible would
severely reduce the size of the main gallery, the Director of Parks & Recreation was notified that
we only wanted the existing toilet to be removed.
Several members questioned this decision feeling that an installation of a new bathroom would not
only enhance the gallery, but it would also allow us to update the present configuration of the
Gallery. An emergency meeting of the Board was convened telephonically on the 17th of March to vote
on the issue. The majority voted in favor of the present contractor's plan to install a new
bathroom.
This design will put a new face in the back area of the gallery. You won't have to enter the other
building to use the facilities if you are the lone docent. The gallery will be re-configured to use
the new space in more flexible configurations.
Thank you to everyone who has cooperated in removing items that have been stored in the back area.
No doubt there will be other changes that need to be addressed during this process. We will
continue to update you as we know more.
Let us keep an open stream of communication. Contact Sandra Woodford with any questions at 982-3946

Scheduled Days: 20
During the month of May, the Waimea Arts Council will present an "Anything Hawaiian" art show.
Artist members of WAC are invited to display two pieces of their work, that have a connection to
Hawaii either in subject matter or materials, The art can be any medium, but must adhere to
published policies.
Should there be any questions about the policies and procedures for showing, please contact Sandra
Woodford with any questions at sandlewood49(no-spam)@hotmail.com or 982-3946.
Dates and times of the show may vary slightly, based on the construction work. A reception for
artists and friends is scheduled for Saturday, May 14th, 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. This will be a good time
to check out the latest changes in the Gallery and the Historic Corner.
It's again time to ready entries for Arts Pacifica Biennale 2005. This island-wide juried
competition, the fourth such showcase of Hawaii Island artistic talent, will be judged by Joel A.
Miller from Japan. A lecturer in Art at both Tama Art University and Musashi Art University, located
just outside Tokyo, his own work has been shown and collected worldwide. He is represented in the
permanent collection(s) of the Machida City Museum, Japan and the Michigan State Univ. Museum.
Versatile in both three and two dimensional art forms, Joel will bring an expert eye to the jurist
position.
The 2005 collection will be shown in Waimea split between two nearby venues Ð the Waimea Arts
Councils' Firehouse Gallery and the Kahilu Theater Lobby. Dates for placing entries are July 1 & 2
between 10 AM and 4 PM both days. Entry fees for the show are as follows: one (1) piece - $15; two
(2) pieces - $25; and three (3) pieces - $30. Entry forms will be available at most frame shops
island wide as well as by Fax or e-mail.
The theme for this bi-annual exhibition is EGG ! Interpretation is left to the creative mind of each
participating artist. If any works' connection to Ôegg' should be hard to fathom, note space will be
provided on each entry form for a simple explanation. Work should be ready to hang/display without
any additional labor. Any piece that requires two or more people to move and/or hang will not be
accepted for this competition.
In 2003, the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Acquisitions Committee made their third buying
visit to this juried showcase for Hawaii artists buying two distinctive pieces for the state
collection. They are again expected to grace us with their presence thus giving artists more
reason(s) beyond the $2500 in prize monies being offered to enter this open competition.
One different aspect of the 2005 Biennale will be inclusion of fine furniture in this competition.
Up to thirty (30) furniture artists can enter a single small table in this separate division of the
show. Each participating maker will be required to pre-purchase a numbered heavy-duty packing case
that measures 30 inches cubed. These works will be accepted as they deliver their tables packed for
shipping out-of-state in these pre-numbered cases.
